Administration in Secunderabad

Municipal Corporation in Secunderabad

Secunderabad Municipality was formed in 1945. In the year 1950, two separate corporations were formed based on the Hyderabad Corporation Act, 1950, one each for Hyderabad and Secunderabad. However, in 1960, both Hyderabad Municipal Corporation and Secunderabad Municipal Corporation  were merged into a single Corporation (under  Hyderabad Municipal Corporation Act, 1955). In 1956, Hyderabad became the capital of Andhra Pradesh.

On April 2007, Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) was formed for proper administration of Secunderabad. It looks after the infrastructural growth and general administration of  Secunderabad.

Mohammed Majid Hussain is the present Mayor of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation and Raj Kumar is the Deputy Mayor. Mohammed Majid Hussain belongs to All India Majlis-e Ittihad al-Muslimin party.

Secunderabad Cantonment along with many other areas of Secunderabad, where defense installations are based, come under administration of Secunderabad Cantonment Board.


Assembly Constituencies


Secunderabad is also a part of Secunderabad Lok Sabha constituency. It consists of seven Legislative Assembly seats, namely, Musheerabad, Amberpet, Khairatabad, Jubilee Hills, Sanathnagar, Nampally and Secunderabad.

12 municipalities from Rangareddy and Medak districts were merged into Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation. These include L.B. Nagar, Malkajgiri, Quthbullapur, Patancheru, Gaddiannaram, Kapra, Kukatpally, Ramachandrapuram, Uppal Kalan, Alwal, Serilingampalli and Rajendranagar.

Judiciary in Secunderabad

The High Court, CBI court, labour court are all in Hyderabad. But Hyderabad and Secunderabad are twin cities and not separate cities. The denizens of Hyderabad and Secunderabad have access to all these courts and government offices which function for their welfare.

Police in Secunderabad

Police in Secunderabad too is prompt in maintaining law and order in the city. There are cyber cells and special police stations for women. The traffic police takes care of streamlined traffic movement in the city.

Prisons in Secunderabad

During the British rule, Victorian Prison was used as confinement quarters. It is situated just near the Tirumalgiri (Trimulgherry) fort. It is no more  used as a jail. However, 15 kms from Secunderabad, there is a jail known as Cherlapalli Central Jail. One of the oldest jails located in old city of Hyderabad in Chanchalguda locality is the Chanchalguda Central Jail. It is known also for its architecture and design.
